Abstract:

High peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is a well-known drawback in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). In this article, the pilot arrangement in OFDM is exploited to remedy this difficulty. A PAPR reduction scheme is proposed in this article which implements by imposing different linear phases to subcarriers within the pilot tones and selecting the phase vector with the lowest PAPR for transmission. The receiver can recover the phase rotation during the channel estimation procedure, thus it does not require additional side information to recover the signal. The scheme is implemented in Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T) systems for simulations, and the results show that after reducing PAPR, it remains the same bit-error rate (BER) performance over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and fading channels without any side information. In addition, the proposed scheme improves the efficiency of the PAPR reduction compared to the conventional methods, for example, partial transmit sequences (PTS) and selected mapping technique (SLM), with the same number of candidate signals.
