Abstract
Three wavelet algorithms and JPEG compression were applied to two adult PA chest radiographs for visual evaluation and study by three board-certified radiologists. The major factors that we found to affect image compression, when employed for interpretation of projection radiographs, were compression signal space, luminance range, presentation method and viewing distance. Image type, luminance noise and CRT MTF are also major factors in compression,but this preliminary study did not explore their effects in detail.
