Toward a lexicon of musical APL2 phrases (invited)

Published:01 July 1991Publication History

ABSTRACT

Both the programming environment and the notation of APL2 have proven useful in music theory and computer music. APL2 expressions can generate, test, and modify data structures representing musical syntax (actual passages or songs) or musical semantics (facts, ideas, or relationships in music). In this paper our primary concern is syntax-oriented. We examine a few basic parameters of music, introduce data structures that capture essential features of these parameters, and explore some useful expressions. Within these expressions we find several typical "musical objects" and some common transformations on these objects. Most of the expressions are simple, but their musical results are far from trivial. This only underscores the power of APL2.
