ABSTRACT
This paper presents results from experimentation with and subsequent possibilities of using an ambient light sensor connected to an audio amplifier, as well as a derived DIY kit: the Flickerfon. From the perspective of Interaction Design and Media Architecture, this paper focuses on presenting three different scenarios: a 'friendly neighborhood' or silent party scenario, an exhibition scenario, and the use of the Flickerfon as an instrument for exploring visual phenomena where the perception speed of the visual sense is slower than that of the auditory. By sending sound through visual light it becomes possible to mix different sound sources and benefit from the directional properties of light.

Aesthetic strategies in sonification
Sound can be listened to in various ways and with different intentions. Multiple factors influence how and what we perceive when listening to sound. Sonification, the acoustic representation of data, is in essence just sound. It functions as ...
Lyricon Lyrics + Earcons Improves Identification of Auditory Cues
Proceedings, Part II, of the 4th International Conference on Design, User Experience, and Usability: Users and Interactions - Volume 9187Auditory researchers have developed various non-speech cues in designing auditory user interfaces. A preliminary study of "lyricons" lyricsï ź+ï źearcons [1] has provided a novel approach to devising auditory cues in electronic products, by combining ...
Ambient media in public spaces
SAME '08: Proceedings of the 1st ACM international workshop on Semantic ambient media experiencesAs artists working in public art and media, we have repeatedly found that the usual parameters and characteristics for a work of art have to be heavily modified to be successful in an ambient environment. Art does not normally strive to be innocuous or ...
