ABSTRACT
To provide cultural night experiences with tourists in Kanazawa City, we exhibited our interactive digital installation titled "Temari and Shadow" at the open space of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. Our installation utilizes shadows cast by people standing in front of a projector. We chose Kanazawa's Kaga Temari, a hand-sized colorful toy ball made of thread, as a motif of this work. Our shadow-based system achieved 60 fps in rendering and we estimate that the time required for the response of a shadow is 133 ms. However, the latency can be shortened by a projector with a higher refresh rate. The result of the questionnaire at the exhibition suggests that our system is widely accepted by the people of various ages.

Shedding light on shadow: real-time interactive artworks based on cast shadows or silhouettes
MM '11: Proceedings of the 19th ACM international conference on MultimediaDigital shadowing is a source of interest in immersive and interactive artworks because it enhances the feeling of presence, and because it is a very intuitive and engaging interaction "device." Soft shadows from extended light sources with penumbra deep shadow maps
GI '05: Proceedings of Graphics Interface 2005This paper presents a new method of precomputing high-quality soft shadows that can be cast on a static scene as well as on dynamic objects added to that scene. The method efficiently merges the visibility computed from many shadow maps into a penumbra ...
Fitted virtual shadow maps
GI '07: Proceedings of Graphics Interface 2007Too little shadow map resolution and resulting undersampling artifacts, perspective and projection aliasing, have long been a fundamental problem of shadowing scenes with shadow mapping.
We present a new smart, real-time shadow mapping algorithm that ...
