ABSTRACT
Cultural Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the study, design and development of socio-technological AI systems that are implicitly or explicitly aware of the subtle and subjective complexity of human culture. Language, being a social and cultural data source, is a prominent data type in AI, both as input and output. Illustrated by case studies I review current issues in dealing with language in AI systems: language is never easy, and words matter.
