Abstract

Authors have been invited to submit papers to the 9th SIGOPS European Workshop describing original research related to the various aspects of operating systems and distributed systems, from design to implementation, analysis, deployment and utilization. We seek thought-provoking ideas and innovative research directions that are able to foster lively and productive discussions. The 9th European Workshop will focus on the theme "Beyond the PC: New Challenges for the Operating System". Authors are encouraged to address the new OS challenges posed by the widespread use of "computers that don't look like computers", such as TV's, PDA's, mobile phones, appliances, etc.Appropriate themes include:• Power management, wireless communication, quality of service• Support for mobile users, information access on the move• Peer detection and spontaneous interactions of users and devices• New applications, electronic business support, multimedia supportThe traditional areas of OS research are also of interest, particularly as they pertain to the new kinds of computers:• Process management, virtual memory, networking, file systems, security and real-time• Naming, location, security, reliability, transaction support, scalability, performance, system monitoring and tuning• Distributed objects, sharing, extensibility, heterogeneity
