A Review on the Medical Imaging Techniques in the Diagnosis of the Lower Extremity Injuries

Medical imaging techniques have been extensively applied into the diagnosis and aetiology of sports injuries. This study was aimed to provide a current review on the application of medical imaging techniques into the diagnosis and evaluation research of musculoskeletal injuries to the lower extremity. Keywords including 'Medical Imaging Techniques (X-ray, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Ultrasound)', AND 'Bone', OR 'Muscle', OR 'Tissue' Injuries were used to search articles in the database, including Web of Science, Google Scholar and PubMed were used. Application of techniques, such as X-ray, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Ultrasound in the injuries of the bone, muscle, ligament, tendon and cartilage to the lower extremity were reviewed and discussed. A future direction of applying machine learning into the diagnosis and evaluation of medical images from musculoskeletal injuries were introduced.
