Failure Mode and Effect Analysis in Medical Management of Neonatal Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter
Objective: There are some complications during the neonatal peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC). The aim of this study was to explore the medical management effect of failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) in neonatal PICC. Method: A total of 103 neonates with
PICC were selected in our hospital in recent years. The FMRA were used to calculate the risk priority number (RPN) which consists of the possibility of occurrence, the possibility of detection and the severity of failure mode. The medical management plan was designed according to the RPN value.
Another 103 patients before FMEA implementation were selected as control group. The difference of catheterization risk between the two groups was compared. Result: The risks whose RPN higher than 100 were infection and errhysis. The risk whose RPN was from 50 to 100 were allergy, mechanical
phlebitis and catheter misplacement. The risks whose RPN was lower than 50 were plugging, catheter slippage, delivering difficulty and puncture failure. Compared with control group, the incidence of PICC-related risks decreased significantly after FMEA. Conclusion: The FMEA in medical
management of neonates PICC is helpful to reduce the occurrence of risk events.
