Zusammenfassung

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) Anbieter haben großes Interesse daran, durch das Angebot standardisierter Services das Entstehen dynamischer Ökosysteme unabhängiger Softwareanbieter (Independent Software Vendor; ISV) zu fördern. Allerdings neigen Plattform-Ökosysteme oft zu hoher Fluktuation und niedriger Loyalität von ISVs. Eine bislang kaum erforschte Erklärung für dieses Verhalten ist, dass aus Sicht der ISV Kosten entstehen, wenn sie einem Plattform-Ökosystem beitreten und dort Apps entwickeln. Diese Kosten können hierbei schnell die durch das Ökosystem generierten Mehrwerte überwiegen. Dieser Beitrag untersucht, wie verschiedene Konfigurationen kostenverursachender Faktoren und ressourcenbasierter Nutzungspotentiale von Plattform-Ökosystemen die Loyalität eines ISV beeinflussen. Im Rahmen einer konfigurationstheoretischen Herangehensweise werden komplexe Interaktionseffekte von Kosten und Nutzen als kausale Bedingungen identifiziert. Basierend auf den Ergebnissen einer fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) extrahiert dieser Beitrag Muster, die die Loyalität von ISV erklären und die als Blueprint für die Gestaltung von Plattform-Ökosystemen dienen können.

Abstract

Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) providers are increasingly engaged in nurturing vibrant ecosystems of independent software vendors (ISVs) by offering standardized services. However, cloud ecosystems have also been known for its fluctuation and low ISV loyalty. A currently under-researched explanation for this behavior may lie in the fact that ISVs face considerable costs when joining and developing apps on a specific platform. If these costs are too high, they can rapidly outweigh the additional value generated by the ecosystem. This study therefore explains the role of different configurations of cost-inducing factors and resource benefits in influencing an ISV’s platform loyalty. By using a configurational approach based on fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (FsQCA), we display complex interactional effects of cost and benefits as causal conditions on ISVs’ loyalty in the ecosystem and thus provide valuable insights for both practice as well as theory on platform ecosystems.
