ABSTRACT

The implementation of state-wide computing services requires more than just network connectivity to offer a real benefit to scientists. In particular, adequate organizational processes are needed to make remote services available in a comfortable, adaptable and safe fashion. In this paper we describe the implementation of the resource cooperative North Rhine-Westphalia (RV-NRW), an IT-resource pool among the universities' computing centers in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. We emphasize the organization and provisioning of the services offered therein and extrapolate from these experiences on the upcoming implications and challenges on organizing computational services in university environments in general.
