Abstract
Conventional, list-based menus in automotive environments lack an adequate conceptual interaction model for the typically extremely heterogeneous user group. This thesis presents an approach towards increasing likeability and usability of in-vehicle information systems by providing a user-centered interaction concept that is based on graphical metaphors. Analogies to familiar everyday things and their physical characteristics lead to animations, spatial representations and cartographic visualizations of large data volumes. A comparison with traditional list-based 2D menus and an evaluation under automotive conditions has shown that this approach fulfils automotive requirements and enhances likeability and usability. As a result, this approach shows explicit advantages and high potential for satisfying the challenges of future in-car usage by a strongly diverse group of users.
