Abstract:
Using parallel computing to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) for simulations of physical phenomena usually requires communication of data between the processing elements (PEs) for synchronization of the computations being done across them. Especially as the number of PEs increase, time required for this communication may be a significant part of the overall time required for the simulation. We study analytically and experimentally the effect of reducing the frequency of communication in such a situation. Specifically, we impose periodic communication and synchronization between the PEs. The system is modeled as a switched dynamical system and the reduction of simulation time is shown.
