Abstract:

A power management strategy for a hybrid system composed of a fuel cell, a battery and a DC/DC power converter is presented. This is aimed at balancing the power flow between the stack and the battery and avoiding electrochemical damage due to low oxygen concentration in the fuel cell cathode. Starting from the results presented in [3] and [2] the present work is aimed at showing the performance of the power management strategy in a more realistic test bed. In particular, an accurate lithium-ion battery model has been adopted. Presented in [4] the model is based on electrochemical law and describes the solid material diffusion into the battery electrodes. Based on an average version of the model, an extend Kalman filter is also introduced in the control strategy, in order to estimate the battery State of Charge. The closed loop strategy performance has been tested in simulation.
