From the early modern period up to the 20th century, printed newspapers were the most important medium of communication and opinion – which they remain (alongside radio, television and the Internet) to this day. Systematic digitisation of relevant and typical historical newspapers and a research-friendly German newspaper portal featuring full-text and image searches aim to make this influential medium accessible and usable for cultural and academic purposes. The fragile originals can be then protected, and their hidden content finally rediscovered and rendered comprehensively accessible using innovative digital humanities techniques. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to integrate the many (mostly regional) projects in Germany as quickly as possible in a newspaper portal operated by the Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek. Following completion of the Europeana Newspapers project, as well as a pilot project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) which concluded with a master plan for the digitisation of historical newspapers in Germany, the article below provides an overview of the current state of development.
