Technological advances in telehealth systems are primarily focused on sensing, monitoring and analysis. Intervention, behavior alternation and in general affecting change could use additional research and technology development. Persuasion technology and mechanisms are urgently needed to counter user resistance to change and promote healthy lifestyle. In this talk, I will summarize our ongoing research in the area of persuasive telehealth in the context of obesity and diabetes. I will cover an action-based behavior model that we proposed [1] to enable effective persuasion. I will also review existing technologies we believe are most suitable for implementing our behavior model and for enabling persuasive telehealth. One such promising technology is domestic robots [2]. I will demonstrate how the science fiction prototyping approach is being adopted to validate the effectiveness of the technology channel (domestic robots) and the overall model. The validation effort is an ongoing collaboration with Intel Digital Home group.
