This paper gives a detailed report on the building and management of a hybrid wired and wireless sensor networks with cloud services for monitoring the early-stage environmental corrosion. We attempt to address the design and evaluation of highly reliable communication architectures with redundancies using both wired RS-485-based star network and wireless ZigBee-based mesh networks for low data-rate corrosion monitoring. The lessons learned from problems and issues found after the system deployment and the implemented correction solutions will provide the valuable knowledge and guidelines for future environmental monitoring and sensing applications.
