Material recycling of small-sized e-waste such as mobile phones is an emerging issue in Japan. Manual disassembly is a suitable process to enhance quality of recycling. However, the labor cost of manual disassembly is one of the largest problems. Current recycling processes using physical separation methods are efficient. But, those methods require large facilities and case-by-case adjustment of the processes. The authors think human vision will be the most flexible and reliable method to separate valuable parts and non-valuable parts. This paper proposes a basic concept of “cloud inverse manufacturing” based on remote operation via internet. In the concept, cloud operators of the system participate in the physical separation processes as if they were playing an online game. The paper evaluates the separation efficiency of crushed particles and showed that metal-rich particles can be recognized by vision. The paper also designed a prototype manipulator to separate target particles from a conveyer. The paper concludes that the concept is promising to carry out low-cost and high-quality recycling of small-sized e-waste.
