Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) can be an important computational tool for increasing the efficiency of SAT solvers. We have developed an efficient SAT solver for computing van der Waerden numbers using a cluster of over 200 Xilinx Spartan XC6SLX150 FPGAs that were originally dedicated to Bitcoin mining. This cluster should compute W(5,3) in 6–9 months with modest power and cooling requirements. We discuss the challenges of building and operating this computational system. Finally, we report the values of four new off-diagonal van der Waerden numbers.
