Foreword: This volume contains the proceedings of the 12th International Joint Conference on Computational Intelligence (IJCCI 2020), sponsored since its creation in 2009 by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC). IJCCI is technically co-sponsored by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Intelligence. IJCCI is held in cooperation with the ACM Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence, the Spanish Association of Artificial Intelligence, the International Neural Network Society, the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence, the World Federation on Soft Computing, the European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology and the Associazione Italiana per l'Intelligenza Artificiale. This year IJCCI was, exceptionally, held as a web-based event, from 2 – 4 November, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of IJCCI is to bring together researchers, engineers, and practitioners on the areas of Evolutionary Computation, Fuzzy Computation and Neural Computation. The connection of these areas in all their wide range of approaches and applications forms the International Joint Conference on Computational Intelligence. IJCCI is composed of three co-located complementary conferences, each specialized in one of the aforementioned main knowledge areas. Namely: - International Conference on Evolutionary Computation Theory and Applications (ECTA) - International Conference on Fuzzy Computation Theory and Applications (FCTA) - International Conference on Neural Computation Theory and Applications (NCTA) The International Conference on Evolutionary Computation Theory and Applications (ECTA) intends to be a major forum for scientists, engineers and practitioners interested in the study, analysis, design, modelling and implementation of biologically inspired systems, both theoretically and in a broad range of application fields. ECTA welcomes both theoretical research and practical applications. The International Conference on Fuzzy Computation Theory and Applications (FCTA) intends to be a major forum for scientists, engineers and practitioners interested in the study, analysis, design, modeling and implementation of fuzzy systems, both theoretically and in a broad range of application fields. The goal of the International Conference on Neural Computation Theory and Applications (NCTA) is to provide a major meeting point for scientists, engineers and practitioners interested in the study, analysis, design, modeling and implementation of neural computing systems, both theoretically and in a broad range of application fields. IJCCI 2020 includes four keynote talks delivered by internationally distinguished speakers: Kalyanmoy Deb (Michigan State University, United States), Erdal Kayacan (Aarhus University, Denmark), Sanaz Mostaghim (Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, Germany) and Michel Verleysen (Machine Learning Group, Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium). In addition, the Special Session on Computational Intelligence for Energy Management and Storage - CI4EMS, chaired by Alessio Martino and Fabio Mascioli was held together with IJCCI 2020. The joint conference, IJCCI received 65 paper submissions from 31 countries, of which 29% were presented as full papers. ECTA 2020 received 27 paper submissions from 16 countries, of which 33 % were presented as full papers. FCTA 2020 received 12 paper submissions from 12 countries, of which 33% were presented as full papers. NCTA 2020 received 23 paper submissions from 14 countries, of which 22 % were presented as full papers. The high quality of the papers received imposed difficult choices in the review process. To evaluate each submission, a double-blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee, whose members are highly qualified independent researchers in the ECTA, FCTA and NCTA topic areas. As in previous editions of the conference, based on the reviewers’ evaluations and on the presentations, selected authors will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers for a book, which will be published by Springer with the best papers of IJCCI 2020. Also, a short list of best papers will be invited for a post-conference special issue of the Springer Nature Computer Science journal. All presented papers will be submitted for indexation by Scopus, Google Scholar, DBLP, Semantic Scholar, Microsoft Academic, EI (Elsevier Engineering Village Index) and Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI/ISI). We would like to express our gratitude to all the people who contributed to IJCCI 2020. First of all, to the authors, whose quality work has been essential for this conference; second, to all members of the Program Committee and auxiliary reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time. Finally, we would like to deeply thank the invited speakers for their excellent contribution in sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, we acknowledge the professional support of the IJCCI 2020 team for all organizational processes, especially given the need to introduce online streaming, forum management, direct messaging facilitation and other web-based activities in order to make it possible for IJCCI 2020 authors to present their work and share ideas with colleagues in spite of the logistic difficulties caused by the current pandemic situation. We hope that all colleagues who participated in the conference and/or read its proceedings, find this a fruitful and inspiring conference.
