Foreword: This book contains the proceedings of the 18th International Conference on Informatics in Control, Automation and Robotics (ICINCO 2021), which is sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC), and held in cooperation with the International Neural Network Society (INNS), the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), and the Portuguese Robotics Society (SPR). This year ICINCO was held as a web-based event due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from 6 - 8 July. The ICINCO Conference Series has now become a major forum to debate technical and scientific advances presented by researchers and developers both from academia and industry, working in areas related to Control, Automation and Robotics that benefit from Information Technology. The high quality of the ICINCO 2021 program is enhanced by the four keynote lectures, given by internationally recognized researchers, namely: Ilya Kolmanovsky (University of Michigan, United States), Feng Lin (Wayne State University, United States), Nuno Lau (Universidade de Aveiro, Portugal), and Mireille E. Broucke (University of Toronto, Canada). ICINCO 2021 received 120 paper submissions from 38 countries of which 24% were accepted as full papers. In order to evaluate each submission, a double-blind paper review was performed by the Program Committee. As in previous editions of the Conference, based on the reviewer’s evaluations and the presentations, selected authors from the conference will be invited to submit extended versions of their papers for a book that will be published by Springer with the best papers of ICINCO 2021. This year, a short list of best papers will be invited for a post-conference special issue in the Springer Nature Computer Science Journal. We would like to express our thanks and appreciations to all participants. First of all, to the authors, whose quality work is the essence of this conference. Second, to all the members of the Program Committee and all reviewers, who helped us with their expertise and valuable time they have invested in reviewing submitted papers. We would also like to deeply thank the invited speakers for their excellent contributions and sharing their knowledge and vision. Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the professional support of the INSTICC team for all organizational processes, especially given the need to introduce online streaming, forum management, direct messaging facilitation and other web-based activities in order to make it possible for ICINCO 2021 authors to present their work and share ideas with colleagues in spite of the logistic difficulties caused by the current pandemic situation. We hope that you will enjoy the conference and we look forward to having additional research results presented at the next edition of ICINCO. (More)
