Abstract
This paper examines some ways risk arises in electronic commerce systems, and considers whether and how cryptography can be used to manage these risks. The paper suggests a taxonomy of information artifacts based on the kinds of risks they give rise to. The paper proposes protection regimes for several members of the taxonomy.
