Abstract
We describe our participation in the Indonesian-English bilingual task of the 2005 Cross-Language Evaluation Forum (CLEF). We translated an Indonesian query set into English using a commercial machine translation tool called Transtool and attempted to improve retrieval effectiveness using a query expansion technique. However, since our initial retrieval effectiveness was low, the query expansion technique had a negative impact on performance.
