Abstract

The Picture Drawing System is a prototype general purpose graphics system which uses the binary relational database system NDB. The prototype was developed to demonstrate that the full potential of graphics systems can only be realised with an effective database management subsystem, and that the binary relational database approach offers precisely the kind of support needed.

The required database structure is illustrated, and the basic picture interpreter and picture editor algorithms are described. The use of the binary relational database approach makes these algorithms essentially simple. As a result, the implementation of PDS, written in PL/I, occupies only 1000 lines of code.
