Abstract
Today’s use of mobile phones is mostly for coordination purposes. It seems reasonable to assume that 3G and 4G high bandwidth systems will be used in a similar way. This paper therefore suggests to create a framework for “visual coordination” as a particular form of synchronous collaboration. It involves the creation of structured object spaces, including multimedia data, on which coordination takes place. The contribution emphasizes the two essential elements for CSCW, namely a shared view and concurrency awareness. It seems likely that a very small set of generic navigating operations is sufficient to generate a consistent interaction model with a uniform look and feel. Moreover, the object space can be provided by third parties in a network neutral format like XML. To turn collaboration spaces into a business model, however, research communities from fields like databases, document processing, groupware, interface design and mobile communication must join their efforts.
