Abstract
The technical development during the last years empowered the exchange of electronic data using the network which became known as the World Wide Web. Especially the development of new compression algorithms allowed a reduction of the amount of data in multimedia content by a factor of 50 or even more - in most cases without an audible or visible reduction of quality! Additionally, the development and mass deployment of broadband technologies also for residential users made an exchange of large files much more comfortable than in times of the good old 9,6 kBd modem. These developments went hand in hand with the deployment of more and more powerful PCs and improved storage technologies (e.g., Gigabyte harddisks or CD-burners).
