Abstract

Today there is a growing need for enterprises to build global information systems, which are based on heterogeneous, distributed and autonomous data sources. The challenge is to provide cooperative access to this information and to integrate easily and dynamically database systems to such a global information system. Such a system is either used to provide enterprise-wide information for an enterprise or employed for supporting business-to-business applications for a closed group of a number of business partners. In this paper we summarize the technical background of the system VHDBS1, especially its architecture, repository concept, and plug&play mechanism. Furthermore, some application domains of the system are discussed.
