Abstract

Advice presented to the user of a dialog system should be in a form which is adapted to the domain of discourse. In some domains, pictures can be used very effectively to convey information in a way which is easy to understand. Thus if a dialog system is to provide effective advice, it must be able to present information in a pictorial manner.

We propose that pictorial representations of knowledge are a necessary part of knowledge-based systems. To illustrate the power of pictorial representations, we introduce the notion of a picture generator. This is a program which accepts as input a piece of information I from an application program and produces a pictorial presentation S v (I) to convey this information to the user of an advice-giving dialog system. We describe details of a picture generator which we implemented in Prolog. The generator can produce pictorial presentations concerning the installation and maintenance of micro-computers and is used as a front-end for a diagnosis system.
