Abstract
Generally, expert system tools — whether being written in C, Prolog or Lisp — hold the processed knowledge in main memory. Usable expert systems rapidly require fast access to large amounts of knowledge. A "Knowledge Base Management System" (KBMS) managing knowledge structures on a secondary storage is needed. As can be seen from many other contributions to this workshop today's Data Base Management Systems (DBMS) are inadequate for this task because of knowledge being highly structured, manifold and varying. Therefore we believe that a KBMS should not be based on a DBMS; different techniques are required. This is why our field-manager Mr. Gottfried B. Bertram developed an idea of using specific set-oriented theoretical concepts in order to create a KBMS. At ADV/ORGA we developed an initial version of a KBMS which makes available the essential functions for knowledge base software systems like the AI-workbench BABYLON in the form of a C-library. The results represent a new approach to knowledge management on mass memory devices.
