Abstract

This paper deals with the importance of metaknowledge as a key topic for new and challenging applications of information systems. To make this point tangible, a number of interesting applications, particularly in the field of environmental information systems, are discussed. With regard to these applications, difficulties resulting from the distribution of information, from the implicit usage of knowledge by people involved, and difficulties concerning the transformation of data into information are addressed. The insights given here essentially build on a number of projects and workshops on the topic dealt with at the FAW in Ulm.

This paper strongly builds on the articles [15, 28], given in the references.
