Abstract

This paper introduces attitudes as a mechanism for establishing goal states during general problem solving. Several basic algorithms are presented by which attitudes can be computed based on knowledge easily captured in a knowledge base. Finally, the use of attitudes during problem solving is illustrated. Attitudes are shown to be instrumental in establishing goals, resolution of conflicting goals, and to enable opportunistic problem solving.
