Abstract
As part of the European Manned Space Transportation Program, a space-based robotic arm is developed. This paper describes the system level software engineering aspects, and the role of the Ada programming language in the context of the development of its central on-board computer. It is expected that using Ada will support to meet the very stringent requirements on safety and reliability for manned space applications, while assisting the system engineering developments by giving controlled flexibility.
