Abstract
A prototype of a knowledge-based system in laboratory medicine that produces report proposals for haematology is presented. The medical problem-solving process in laboratory medicine can be modelled with the ST-model (select and test). This decreases the complexity of the inference mechanisms and allows the construction of knowledge-acquisition tools that are easy to use for laboratory physicians. The possibility of how to connect the knowledge-based system with a LIS (laboratory information system) is described.
This research applies results of the project GAMES-II, which was partially funded by the AIM Programme of the Commission of the European Union. The partners of this project have been SAGO (Florence, Italy), Foundation of Research and Technology (Heraklion, Greece), Geneva University Hospital (Switzerland), University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), University College of London (UK), the University of Pavia (Italy), and the University of Ulm (Germany).
