4 Dimensional modelling of the human heart

Abstract

This article describes the basic concepts and techniques we applied to the development of a Four-Dimensional Solid Modeling System. The proposed system provides three-dimensional visualization and animation of the human heart based on a medical data set generated by a Magnetic Resonance Scanning Equipment. The three-dimensional visualization of the heart is based on the application of a new Free-Form Solid Modelling technique which is particularly suitable for animation. The complex shape of the heart is represented in an upper abstract modelling level defining a closed free-form surface. This technique preserve first order continuity over the interpolating surface, providing animation at acceptable speed.
