Abstract
Wireless ATM (W-ATM) is an emerging technology for the provision of high-speed data services to mobile users in cellular telecommunication networks. Numerous issues still have to be solved in the design of W-ATM networks. Among those, a relevant problem is the dimensioning of the buffers necessary to guarantee that ATM cells are correctly and sequentially delivered to their destination in spite of the end-user movement. In order to guarantee that the selected buffer sizes are capable of guaranteeing the desired quality of service, accurate performance evaluation models must be provided. This paper presents the first accurate analytical model for buffer sizing in W-ATM networks. The model is based on the Generalized Stochastic Petri Net (GSPN) formalism, and it can be shown to be as accurate as very detailed simulation programs.
