Image enhancement and restoration is a procedure that attempts to improve the image quality by removing the degradation while preserving the underlying image characteristics.
Background
Image quality is often deteriorated during acquisition, compression, and transmission. Typical degradations include image blur introduced by lens out-of-focus, resolution downgrade due to acquisition equipment pixel limitation, noise spots introduced at high ISO, and JPEG block artifact, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
