Definition

The semantic web is an extension of the current web. It is a vision for the future of the web, in which information is given explicit meaning, making it easier for machines to automatically process and integrate information available on the web [1]. The geospatial semantic web adds space and time dimensions to the semantic web. “Web content” is used here to refer to network‐accessible distributed digital contents. A geospatial semantic web application is any software that takes advantage of the geospatial semantic web. Ontology is a fundamental building block of the semantic web in general and the geospatial semantic web in particular. Ontology is a partial specification of conceptualization [2,3]. Ontology can be thought of as a data model about a domain of interest.
