The basic concept of a distributed GIS is a major paradigm shift from the traditional desktop GIS model, which encouraged the use and development of proprietary and all‐encompassing GIS software programs and data models. With Internet GIS, the underlying design concept is radically changed to shift the focus from proprietary architectures to standards-based components with specialized functions that can interface with other components and GIService providers. This shift has altered the landscape of GIS to foster the growth of many small Internet GIS service providers and specialized services.
