In classical electromagnetic theory, light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation propagate as waves. Quantum mechanics teaches us that nature is more complicated; light propagation can be modeled as either a wave or a particle, depending on the viewpoint and measurement process of the observer. A photon is a “particle” of light, in the same sense that an electron is a “particle” of electricity. When light is absorbed by a piece of silicon in an camera sensor, the model for the interaction is that photons of light are individually absorbed by the silicon and excite electron-hole pairs in the silicon that result in an electrical signal that can be processed to generate images.
