The high-definition (HD) video standard has been developed as the successor to the analog, standard definition (SD) video, which (in the United States) dates back to the first proposal by the National Television System Committee (NTSC) in 1941. The HD standard has been developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) and was approved in 1995. The ATSC standard encompasses an all-digital system and was developed by a Grand Alliance of several companies.
