Definition
A standardized metadata system for describing the features of multimedia content, addressing a broad spectrum of multimedia applications and requirements.
Overview
As consumers of multimedia have moved from being passive viewers, e.g. watching a DVD, to active users, e.g. searching for an MP3, so there has been a need to create, exchange, retrieve and reuse multimedia information [1]. Such active use relies upon an understanding of the content of multimedia streams. Such understanding is represented by metadata. MPEG-7, formally known as the Multimedia Content Description Interface, provides a standardized scheme for such metadata, which are referred to as descriptionsin the nomenclature of the standard.
