Networked collaboration environments are designed to allow multiple participants or groups of participants in geographically distributed locations to seamlessly interact and collaborate.

Introduction

With the increasing globalization of businesses and enterprises there is also a deepened interest in effective collaboration tools that work across distributed locations. Earliest experiments in analog video conferencing date back to the invention of television. These initial systems used dedicated transmission channels. In 1968 AT&T experimented with using the public telephony network to enable video conferencing. However, at that time the achievable video quality was insufficient due to the lack of bandwidth and processing power (for effective video compression).
