Definition

This is a monographic, bipartite substitution (substitutions and permutations) \({V }_{25} \rightarrow { {W}_{5}}^{2}\), known in antiquity (Polybios) for the Greek alphabet. In a modern form, a standard alphabet Z 25 (left) or a mixed alphabet V 25 (right) is inscribed into a 5 × 5 checkerboard (Polybios square), like
