Abstract
This paper will look at two areas which are of importance to the field of decision support: ‘artificial intelligence’ and ‘simulation modelling’. These areas are often brought together through aspects of expert systems which are used to model aspects of expert decision making. The chapter will introduce simulation modelling, acting as a background to several of the chapters in this theme, and will look at areas of expert systems which are used in simulation.
