Information Systems as Powerful Forces of Change

  • Chapter
Modelling for Added Value

Abstract

This paper makes a brief journey through time in order to describe some of the landmarks in the evolution and development of information systems. These observations indicate that information systems have from the very earliest times in the history of our planet exerted a very great influence. At first, and for a very long period, information systems based on natural biological systems were predominant. These appeared to act in a harmonious and self-regulatory manner which resulted in stable ecosystems. More recently the mantle of change has been passed to information systems based on technological advances made by mankind. While many of these advances have provided great benefits, the manner in which some of these are being used is causing some concern and giving rise to the question of whether our knowledge is outstripping our wisdom.
