Glossary

Crowdsourcing:

A portmanteau word combining “crowds” and “outsourcing,” first used by Jeff Howe in an article in Wired, in 2006. This refers to methods of obtaining information or procedural help in solving problems from a crowd or group of humans. Members of the crowd are usually compensated implicitly or explicitly for their efforts and may have no relation with each other or may be connected by means of social or other connections

Human Computation:

Performing a computational task by involving humans as data sources or computational elements

Participatory Sensing:

Collaborative sensing activity where humans perform the role of sensors in a traditional sensor network

Produsers:

A portmanteau word combining “producers” and “users.” This refers to users in certain systems, who may also be responsible for producing content. In many cases, produsers create shared value for each other, for example, by annotating or curating content on a social media website
