Definition

A method of obtaining motor or sensory information from the peripheral nervous system for the purpose of implementing closed-loop control of neuroprosthetic systems (e.g., functional electrical stimulation devices or electrical neuromodulation therapies).

Detailed Description

The peripheral nerve can consist of one or more bundles of nerve fibers (defined as a fascicle) that are tightly enclosed within a thin layer of connective tissue called the perineurium. The fascicle, in turn, is surrounded by the endoneurium, which is constructed from connective, collagen, and vascular tissue. As the nerve traverses distally from the spinal cord, the typically single (mono-fascicular) configuration of the peripheral nerve begins to diverge into multiple branches at various distal locations.
