Symmetric Distributed Computing with Dynamic Load Balancing and Fault Tolerance

  • Chapter
Languages, Compilers and Run-Time Systems for Scalable Computers

Abstract

We present a system for functional parallel computing on distributed memory machines, which does dynamic load balancing and is totally symmetric. This means that every node can perform any computation and is client and server at the same time. Furthermore, the calling convention is similar to threads on shared memory machines to allow a uniform usage of parallel and distributed procedure calls. Finally the communication and computation is strictly separated for easy maintenance of the user program.
