Definition

A palm vein image sensor is a device used for palm vein authentication. The device captures images of the vein patterns in the palm by emitting near-infrared rays that are absorbed by the hemoglobin in the veins. The field of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and imaging has been researched for many years, and the palm vein sensor uses this technology.

In 1985, Joseph Rice filed a patent in which infrared imaging of the patterns of subcutaneous blood vessels for the identification of individuals was disclosed. In 2003, Fujitsu developed a box-type device for palm vein authentication. This Fujitsu’s device was designed for contactless uses.
