Definition

“We all live in a connected world” (Barabási 2013). This statement is a clichébecause one sees connections in all activities, such as in religious meetings, workplace associations, college clubs, and online interactions. Unfortunately, regarding networks in rural areas, the word “all” belies the reality because connectivity in these areas is an issue. This entry focuses on areas in which networks (particularly social networks) have been used by rural communities and on studies that are relevant to improving life in rural settings. Also, it touches on social settings related to rural areas to understand some of the current findings.
